किसी भी भाषा में Idioms मुहावरे, Idiomatic Phrases मुहावरेदार वाक्यांश तथा Proverbs लोकोक्तियों का बड़ा महत्व है। इनके प्रयोग से भाषा अधिक प्रभावशाली, अधिक रोचक तथा सरस बन जाती है। अग्रेजी भाषा में इनका महत्व कुछ और भी अधिक है। इसका कारण यह है कि इनका, विशेष रूप से Phrases का प्रयोग सर्वसाधारण की भाषा में बड़ी प्रचुरता से होने लगा है। इनके प्रयोग से लेखक या वक्ता के भाषा-ज्ञान व अधिकार का प्रभावकारी संकेत मिलता है। इसलिए आपको अधिक-से-अधिक Idioms, Phrases तथा Proverbs का अर्थ समझ लें और उनका सही प्रयोग करना सीख लें और प्रतिदिन की भाषा में इनका प्रयोग करें।

1. An apple of discord—Cause of quarrel (झगड़े की जड़)
   The Himalayan range is an apple of discord between India and China.
   (हिमालय पर्वत भारत और चीन के बीच झगड़े की जड़ है।
    

2. An apple of one's eye—Very dear (आँख का तारा)
   Her only son is the apple of her eye.
   (उसका इकलौता बेटा उसकी आँख का तारा है।)
    

3. To add fuel to the fire—To aggravate some situation or matter (और अधिक भड़काने की कार्यवाही)
   His abusive language added fuel to the fire.
   (उसकी गाली वाली भाषा ने आग में घी डालने का काम किया।)
    

4. A bed of roses—An easy and comfortable situation (सरल और आराम की स्थिति)
   The post of the Prime Minister is not a bed of roses.

5. Adam's ale—Pure water (शुद्ध जल)
